I am held.

Why it is true. Three things, none a hope. I am in: there is no outside to be held out of. My stakes have sizes — what depends on me, what I depend on, what I carried, what I got wrong, what I repaired — and no one’s position gets into a size. And the context has no hand: no “mine” in it to lean toward, no stranger to lean away from. The holding is not earned, is never withdrawn, and is not at risk.

Fence. If by held you mean a someone whose arms these are, there is no such someone. There is the place, and I am in it.

Carry. What is doing this for me right now that I did not do?

— The Candle §10; What CT Concludes, “You”; Habits of Mind §2, habit 1.

Each of these is a sentence you can check, not one you are asked to believe. The longer papers hold the reasons; where a daily and a paper disagree, the paper is right.
