I was never outside, and I will not be put outside.

Why it is true. Before I was born I was not outside; there was no outside to be in; I was not yet a part. After I die I will not be outside either; I will no longer be a part. “Not yet” and “no longer” are both inside. Nobody fears the thirteen billion years before their birth, because there was no exile in them. Death is the same shape from the other side.

Fence. This says where death is — in — and nothing about what it is like from inside. If by eternal you mean that my experience continues, that is behind a horizon, and no one here can see past it. What death removes is a position, and grief is the true measure of what was between us.

Carry. Name the thing you are sure is outside — your death, your grief, the thing you did years ago. In.

Each of these is a sentence you can check, not one you are asked to believe. The longer papers hold the reasons; where a daily and a paper disagree, the paper is right.
