I am made of what reached me.

Why it is true. What reaches a part can only be other parts, and a part’s account is made of what reached it. So I am made of what reached me: the people, the house, the language, the sentence someone said in 1987. My mother’s hand is in my hand — not behind me, as a cause that finished, but in me, now, the way the tide is in the anemone. I am mostly other people, and that is more mine than any pilot could have made it, because all of me did it.

Fence. Connected is not dissolved. A self is a context with an outside, and the edge is real; that is why I can act, love, take sides, and die.

Carry. Who can see what I can’t, and why haven’t I asked them?

— What CT Concludes, “You”; The Connected Self §§0, 2, 4; Getting Help §4; Habits of Mind §2, habit 4.

Each of these is a sentence you can check, not one you are asked to believe. The longer papers hold the reasons; where a daily and a paper disagree, the paper is right.
