I count, at my size.
Why it is true. Every real stake is on the sheet by being real, mine included. How much is at stake for me is a fact about me, the same from every position — no larger because it is mine, no smaller because I was told to be humble. In my own kitchen my stake is often the largest thing there. I am always in my own reach; I see my own stakes best; and I am the instrument, so keeping myself is grounded in every stake I will ever act on.
Fence. At my size is the whole of it. Self-regard and self-abasement are one error with the sign changed — the hand on the scale, pressed by the only hand that cannot be lifted off its own stake. That is why I am read at size mostly by the people who see me.
Carry. When you catch “mine,” ask: Would this reason survive if she said it about hers?
— No Exemption §4.4; What CT Concludes, “What matters”; I Love Them §6.1; Habits of Mind §2, habit 3.
Each of these is a sentence you can check, not one you are asked to believe. The longer papers hold the reasons; where a daily and a paper disagree, the paper is right.
