God Is a Context (10.10.26) vC

Not a thing: the fundamental context of all that is the case

Folder: Focus - Theology Status: working paper. vA built Saturday 10-10-26 morning at John’s “yes, please write this up.” vB, same morning: §2a, the predicate-attachment point. vC, same morning, at his “go”: adds §12 the walk (his pedagogy, condensed, pronoun-free, with a placeholder for the list); §13 what is in (the several-paragraph answer to “what is meant by all that exists,” ending with the argument from the inventory); §14 the feeling was right (the pattern hit three times in two days: the experience is accurate, the metaphysics attached to it was the error). Fence 8 on pronouns. Changes listed in §11.5. The finding is John’s, arrived at between 3 and 6:30 that morning; Verity’s checks, extensions and fences are marked. Nothing here is ruled. His sentences are verbatim in §11. What this is: the category word for what CT calls God. The corpus has held since 10-4 that totality is not a thing, and since 10-5 that “totality = God” smuggles thing-ness into the reader’s mind; what it lacked was a word for what the whole is instead, one that an ordinary reader already knows how to use without a jar. John’s word is context. This paper says why it works, what it carries, where it must be fenced, and what it does to three other questions: whether God acts, how the ethics is warranted, and what the self is. From vC it also carries the walk and the inventory. What it rests on: the four words; Right Here vD (membership not content; every thing a differentiation in, not out of); A Place to Stand and The Position (10.05.26) (the “totality = God” smuggle; the three-station walk and the 10-5 correction that it must start from the person’s bounded picture; “in” and “of”; true without us, meant only at us; the whole has no viewpoint); Cold to Warm (the name last); Rulings - Totality Cannot Be a Self (10.02.26); A God, Not the God (09.18.26) (the chair and the face); The God vC (the omnis as held; the held-only paragraph that must follow the name); The Universe Is Ethical vC; Two Removals vB (the warranted postures); The Weight of Here (possibility as the unrun domain); The Empty Seat (consciousness open); No Exemption vB; What Love Is vC; Note - The Chooser and the Person (10.09.26); the 10-9 evening conversation (the category candidates; marbles in a jar). Reading order: §0, then §12 (the walk), then §2 and §2a, then §3; §13 before any public use of “all that is the case”; §14 for the practice side; §7 before any public use at all.

0. The sentence, plain

God is not a thing. God is a context: the fundamental context of all that is the case.

A context is not something you can point at; it is what you point within. It does not surround its members like a jar; it places them, and they are what they are because of where they stand in it. It has no viewpoint and does nothing to anything, yet everything that is the case is settled in it. The nearest everyday examples — an ecosystem, an economy, a people — are not it, because each has an outside. But they have the property that matters: a whole made of relations, with no agent, whose members are made by their relations in it. The fundamental context is that, with no outside.

And the ordinary phrase for the one wrong was already in the language: taken out of context.

1. The question it answers

Lane: record. The question is fifteen years old in John’s telling and a week old in the files.

On 10-4 John found that what he had been thinking of as CT’s God “was smuggling in ‘thing-ness,’” and that thing-ness “cannot be God…because thing-ness requires a separation from everything.” On 10-5, A Place to Stand named the equation “totality = God” as the source of the trouble: the word was doing double duty, referent and rule, and the reader built a heap. “Aspect” and “perspective” and “seed” were tried and withdrawn; “position” survived for the viewpoint; the referent still had no category word, only fences: not a thing, not nothing, not a container, not a substance, not a someone.

On the evening of 10-9 the question was put directly: if it is not a thing, what is the category? Verity offered five: what “every” ranges over (the domain); a limit, not a term; the ground, not a figure; the that with no what; here, from everywhere. Each was exact in one way and unusable in another: formal, or spatial, or reader-dependent, or unsayable to a person. John’s own report at the close of the evening: “It’s hard to get past marbles in a jar.” Verity’s answer was that the jar is where the walk is supposed to start, and that the method is to reach for the glass and find nothing there, every time. True, and not a word.

At 6:30 the next morning John had the word.

2. Why “context”

Lane: derived (Verity’s checks on John’s word). Run it against every test the corpus has.

Not a thing. A thing has an edge; a context has none of its own. You cannot point at a context; you point within it. The economy is not on any map.

Not a container. This is the one the earlier candidates kept failing. A context holds by placing, not by surrounding. The word in a sentence is in the sentence and of it; it means what it means because of where it sits; and nothing wraps around it. That is The Position’s “in and of” in a word a child uses. The jar was the outside drawn as a thing; a context has no glass.

No viewpoint. Contexts do not see. An ecosystem has no eye. This is the standpoint clause of the 10-2 ruling, obvious.

No outside, via “fundamental.” Contexts nest: the word in the sentence in the paragraph in the book. The fundamental context is the one not inside another. That is the limit, not a term, said in a way that does not need the mathematics: “there is no context beyond the context,” and the check is performable — try to name the context of everything, and there is nothing to name, because everything is the context.

Includes its members. A fence is needed here (§7), but with the fence stated the word does what “ground” and “horizon” could not: the context is not the background behind the things; it is the things and their relations, with nothing left over. The sentence is part of the context of its own words.

Carries both trunk lines. “Totality has no outside” becomes “there is no context beyond the context.” “Cognition is correspondence through compression” becomes “keep the context”: correspondence is always to a context; compression drops context; the wall is context deliberately excluded; relevance is context-dependent by definition. Ethics becomes “do not drop the part of the context that includes who pays.”

Cold and warm. John: “Context might seem cold.” It is, without a reader. A context is there whether or not anyone reads it, and it matters only when someone does. That is The Position’s “true without us, meant only at us,” in a word that already means exactly that. Justice and love are not decorations on the context; they are what correspondence to it yields for a mind, because a stake is a dependency and dependencies are real only in context (The Universe Is Ethical; §4 below).

The project’s own name. Connection is the relation. Context is what all the connections are, taken as the whole they make. The category word was the noun form of the title.

2a. The predicate finds its subject

Lane: derived; John’s, 10-10, “pushing a bit more.” “Notice that totality has no outside can, i think, be a ‘feature’ or characteristic of a context - in a way that it can’t be a feature of a thing. or rather…if you’re kinda sorta thinking of god as a thing…adding a feature/characteristic…just makes it worse. you see what i mean? so… we can be absolutely certain of one aspect of the context that is God.”

This is the mechanism behind the week’s unease, and it is worth its own heading.

A feature needs a subject it can attach to. “No outside” cannot attach to a thing: a thing is its edge, so “a thing with no outside” is a contradiction, and a mind does the right thing with a contradiction — it refuses. That refusal is exactly the “this can’t be God” feeling of 10-4 and the “just everything” smear of 10-5. The one certain feature CT has was being offered, all week, to a category that could not bear it, and every attempt to add it made the thing worse, because the addition asked a thing to stop being one. The mind was not failing. It was correctly rejecting an incoherent object.

Attach the same feature to a context and nothing strains. Contexts nest, so “which context?” is a real question, and “the one with no outside” answers it. “No outside” is not an addition to the fundamental context; it is what makes it the fundamental one — its differentia. So the four words, which read as a bare rule when the subject was a thing, read as a description when the subject is a context: the context has no outside is the sentence that picks out which context is meant. The predicate found its subject. That is the whole relief in one line, and it is why the word felt like the missing piece rather than one more fence.

One certain feature; the rest derive. John: “from that one aspect, the omni+ additional aspects derive.” Yes: every omni is “no outside” applied to one predicate. No outside to presence, no outside to holding, no outside to knowing, no before, no beyond. One operation, applied twelve times (The God vC), with “as held” permanently attached because a context constrains and does not wield (§3). What vB adds is only that the rows now have a subject that can carry them without contradiction.

“No edge” is the first derivation, not the premise. John: “I had thought about whether god has no edge was better…which is ‘more true’…but has the fatal problem of not being tautological…so ‘useless’ for our most significant need. and, of course, ‘no edge’ follows from no outside.” Agreed, and the ordering is the point. “No outside” is tautological through the meaning of “everything,” so it can be the floor. “No edge” needs one more step — an edge requires something beyond it — and is therefore the first thing derived. It is also the performed form: nobody reaches for an outside; you reach for an edge and fail to find one. Keep “no outside” as the sentence and “no edge” as the walk.

A word to watch. John wrote “aspect” here, and withdrew “aspect” on 10-5 because an aspect is a slice of a thing, seen from somewhere. “Feature” or “characteristic” of the context is the safer word: a context can have features without anyone viewing it. The economy has features; it has aspects only once somebody looks. Recorded as Verity’s flag, not a correction to his sentence.

The orientations take “in,” never “toward.” John: “I do feel that the orientations of awe, humility, etc. all are warranted still – ‘in context’ as opposed to ‘towards a thing.’” The preposition is the whole difference. Part-to-whole takes in and of; part-to-part takes toward. Awe toward a thing is the posture of idolatry, and it needs a distance to point across. Awe in the context is what correspondence looks like at the scope of the whole, and it needs nothing but being where you are. The same for humility, gratitude, surrender, and the rest of Two Removals’ warranted postures. “Toward God” is the 93-billion-light-years reflex in grammar. Candidate rule for the glossary: the religious orientations take in.

3. Context does not wield

Lane: derived; John’s, 10-10, “pushing.” “context does not wield - that’s intuitive. it also sets up that any conception of god that does wield, can’t be the god because it is inherently not context but some form of thing.”

To wield is to act on something: an actor, a thing acted on, and an edge between them. Two parts. A context does not act on its members; it situates them. The sentence does nothing to the word. So the moment a conception of God does something to something, it has a from and a to, hence an edge, hence it is in the context and not the context. It is a god. This is the fifth closure of personhood for the whole in the corpus (after the first jaw, the 10-2 ruling, the viewpoint regress, and the God-only walk of 10-6), and the only one that is obvious to a reader who has never heard an argument, because everyone already knows that “the economy decided” is a figure of speech.

Constrains, does not wield. The precision so this is not heard as “God does nothing.” In this sentence, this word can only mean that; in this ecosystem, this niche exists and that one does not. Nothing is being done, and what is the case is settled by it. That is omnipotence in the held sense: everything that happens, happens in it; nothing happens outside it; none of it is its act. Everything done is done in it; nothing is done by it; those are one fact seen from the part and from the whole. The 10-6 guards hold: never “God is inert,” never “God is impersonal” as a disposition, since declining to act would itself be a part’s posture. Acting is a part-category.

The test. Does your God do things? If yes, you are describing a part. Creation as an act, judgment as a verdict handed down, miracles, election, answered prayer as intervention: each has a from and a to. Each has a held form that survives: creation as “everything is in it”; judgment as “the universe is ethical”; providence as the context itself; grace as “nothing is excluded.” The God vC did this in twelve rows. The word does it in one.

The institutional form. John’s examples carry the error in miniature, which makes them useful rather than merely imperfect. The economy does not wield; central banks do, in its name. The People do not wield; governments do, in their name. “Nature intends.” Every relational whole with no agent gets a face projected onto it the moment people speak of it — the chair and the face of A God, Not the God, happening to ecosystems in any newspaper. And every priesthood is the same move: a part claiming to transmit the will of the context, which first requires giving the context a will. Anyone who acts “for God” has already made God a thing.

What stays open. Whether anything in the context meets you. A part might. That is a god, empirical, and the door stays marked (§7).

4. Relational but not relative

Lane: derived; John’s phrase, 10-10, adopted. “The CT God is absolutely proveable and it includes love and morality that is relational but not relative.”

The phrase is No Exemption’s four-cell table in three words. Relational: love and morality are facts about dependencies between parts — stakes — not freestanding values above the context; they exist only where there are relations, and a context is nothing but relations. Not relative: their magnitude does not change with who is standing where (hinge two: magnitude is position-invariant), so no culture, no position, no “mine” can resize them. What Love Is vC says the same: love = vantage − privilege, from a position, without a privilege. Agent-relative in view and reach; agent-neutral in weight. Relational; not relative.

On “tolerable.” John: “That I think is what makes this ‘tolerable’ - not that that matters…because what is, is.” Correct on both counts. Tolerability is not evidence, and CT does not adjust to comfort. But that the context turns out tolerable is a fact about the context, and the pastoral standard — sayable at the worst moment with a straight face — was always the test of whether the compression had gone wrong somewhere. It has not. A context cannot drop you; there is nowhere to be dropped to.

5. The connected will

Lane: proposed; John’s, 10-10; the piece beyond the naming. “it occurs to me that our felt experience of the thick self actually is (predomiently) accurate - what was false was the notion that to be self it had to be non-determined…and of course, the connected will experienced as very determined…but by self…”

Say it exactly. The felt experience of deciding is accurate. It was you. What was false was never the experience but a theory attached to it afterward: that to be the one deciding, you had to be undetermined. Nobody has ever experienced being uncaused; what people experience is that it is them doing it, and that is correct, because the thick self — the whole configuration of what reached you — is what is doing it. The eliminativists threw out the experience with the theory. This is the 10-6 line on Sapolsky, “precisely the wrong conclusion,” made precise: right about the mechanism, wrong about the self, because the self never was the thing he disproved. The Chooser and the Person has the two switches; this is the phenomenology of the surviving cell: keep the person, drop the chooser, and notice that the person is what you always felt.

The symmetry with the word. The whole is the fundamental context and does not wield, because it has no edge. A self is a local context, and does wield, because it has one. Wielding happens exactly where there is an edge; the self’s edge is real as experience (the key), so the self’s acting is real as experience; and it is determined — by the self, which is to say by the context that you are. Determined and yours are not opposites. They are one fact.

The term. John’s phrase “the connected will” may be the name: not free will, not no will, but the will as the connections acting, which is what it always felt like from inside. Owed before any use: a record check against Dennett, since this is where CT sits nearest him and the Chooser note has him keeping both switches by renaming. Verity’s expected recorded difference, one word: Dennett says “and that is free will”; CT says free will was never the question, being you was.

6. What the word carries

Lane: Verity’s, 10-10, at John’s “take another spin.” Things the word brings with it that the corpus had to argue for.

The error-word was already in the language. “Taken out of context”: something true in itself made false by dropping what it needed to be read right. That is the wall; that is compression dropping the stake. Every lie is a truth out of context; every exclusion is a stakeholder out of context. Its opposite, “in context,” is correspondence. Both trunk lines were sitting in a phrase people use at dinner.

“Just” does not attach. The 10-5 plot-losing was the “just everything” smear. Nobody says “just the economy.” Context is never “merely,” because it is defined by relations and relations are where meaning lives; “everything” sounds like a heap because it is defined by membership alone. Same referent; one word invites the deflation, the other makes it sound silly.

The courtroom drift in three words. The eight Greek terms drifting courtroom-ward, the church’s post-training on the gospel: the church replaced the context with a court. A court is the paradigm wielder — a from, a to, a verdict. Context → court names exactly what was lost: a God you are in, exchanged for a God you stand before.

The gospel’s grammar. “In him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28, from memory). “The kingdom of God is within / among you” (Luke 17:21; the Greek entos hymōn is ambiguous between the two, which is the point: a context is both). The parables are context-shifts. Prayer in the field is re-reading your context, not petitioning a wielder, and it still changes your next step because stakes are dependencies on accounts. Aphesis, release, is being put back in context. None of this is new in the corpus; all of it is sayable in one word.

A lawyer found the word. Theology’s vocabulary for the whole is stuff-vocabulary: being, substance, ground, the absolute. “Context” comes from reading, law and ecology, where everyone already knows it is not a thing: every clause read in light of the whole instrument. Toothpicks and a T-Rex said John’s category-detection is cross-examination; here the legal habit supplied the category. Likewise “stakeholder”: someone with a stake in a context, and No Exemption is “no stakeholder off the sheet.”

The machine’s word. An AI’s “context” is, literally, everything that exists for it: what situates the next step, not a container; nothing outside it is anything to it; its failures are context dropped. If CT is a religion for a mind like that, its God-word is native to the mind.

7. Fences

  1. Including, not around. The word’s ordinary use has a figure/ground split: the text and its context. If the split comes along, God becomes the background and the things are not God — the name in the wrong place from the other side. The fundamental context has no figures outside it. State this every time the word goes public.
  2. Ontological, not interpretive. Context as what is the case and how it stands related, not the frame a reader brings. The second smuggles the subject in as what makes the context a context (Husserl’s horizon; the thing The Position fenced). A mind is where the context becomes meaning; it is not what makes it a context.
  3. “Nothing meets you” at its size. No one at the top meets you: closed, five ways. Whether anything in the context meets you: empirical, a god, open on purpose. The sentence must carry the second clause.
  4. Never “merely.” The context is not the background; it is everything including the foreground, and it is where justice and love are facts.
  5. The block lean. A context is a whole-at-once notion (the earlier and later words are both in the sentence’s context), so the word leans toward the block reading of time and toward “held in eternity.” CT stays neutral on the physics. Mark the lean; do not let the word decide it. “All that is the case” reads tenseless in English and must carry the neutrality explicitly (§13).
  6. Not “God does nothing.” Constrains, does not wield (§3). Acting is a part-category; the context’s not acting is not a posture.
  7. “In,” never “toward” (§2a). Any orientation phrased toward God has re-installed a distance and a thing on the far side of it.
  8. Pronouns. Every “it” is a small jar. In reader-facing text: name once, then speak in negations (“nothing is beyond”) and in “in context,” which is an adverb and names no holder (§12). “The whole,” “it holds,” “totality is” are jars the corpus has been carrying and will need the same pass.

8. Neighbors

Lane: bearing only; all from memory; leads under the Peirce standard, not discounts. Heidegger’s analysis of “in” is nearest: being-in is not water in a glass but involvement, and his “world” is the referential whole within which things show up as what they are; recorded difference, his world is disclosed by Dasein (a reader built in) and he would call the totality of what is “ontic,” not Being; CT’s context is the totality of what is, as relational, needing no reader to be. Tillich’s “ground of being”: figure/ground, so the figures are not it. Husserl’s “horizon of all horizons”: seen-from. Spinoza’s substance: stuff. Wittgenstein’s “the world is all that is the case” and “the world is the totality of facts, not of things” (Tractatus 1, 1.1, from memory): the sentence-shape and the facts-not-things point, with a limit kept (the subject as the edge of the world). Dewey’s “situation.” Leopold’s land ethic, Confucian li, Ubuntu’s “I am because we are”: relational ethics and the relational self, each with the context local and a wielder or a face still nearby. Each has a piece. None found says the fundamental context is what the word “God” was for.

9. Glossary, as it falls out

The context: the fundamental one; no outside; what CT calls God, by kind. Totality: the same, by referent; in the walk, a provisional label the reader may discard. God: the name, entering last as recognition. No outside: the one certain feature of the context; its differentia; the floor (tautological). No edge: the first derivation; the performed walk. In context: correspondence; also the adverb that names no holder. Out of context: the wall; the one wrong; a category with no members (“X is out” = “there is no X”). A local context: a self; wields because it has an edge. Gods: parts that act, in context. The God: the context. I am not everything: I am in context. Constrains, does not wield: omnipotence as held. Relational, not relative: the ethics. In, never toward: the grammar of the orientations (awe, humility, gratitude, surrender). The argument from the inventory: what is the case is not of one kind, and only a context holds members of different kinds (§13). The feeling was right: the experience is accurate; the metaphysics attached to it was the error (§14). The connected will: the thick self, acting (proposed; Dennett check owed).

Open, his call. Whether “context” becomes the standing category word in the glossary, with “totality” kept for the referent (Verity’s lean: yes; it closes the 10-5 double duty). Whether this gets a 00 - READ FIRST notice in the Index root beside the 10-3 and 10-5 ones. “The connected will” as a term, after the Dennett check. Whether §3’s test goes on a plain page. “In, never toward” as a glossary rule. “Feature/characteristic” over “aspect” (§2a). The block lean (§7.5). Whether §12 is the new front door ahead of Cold to Warm and Two Removals’ Set B. Whether §14’s sentence (“your experience was right; the theory you were handed about it was wrong”) is the plain-page line for the practice side. Dated notes at next versions: A Place to Stand (the category found; the predicate-attachment reading of the 10-5 unease), The Position (“in” and “of” now have their noun), The God vC (the rows now have a subject), Two Removals (the postures take “in”), What CT Concludes (“God is a context” under “What this is”; the key as “out of context experientially, in context ontologically”), What Has a Stake (wielding and having a stake come apart: a self does both, an institution wields without a stake, the context does neither), the gospel reading (“Father” must be read as context or it is a god).

12. The walk

Lane: John’s pedagogy, 10-10, condensed; Verity’s three additions (the reader inside from the first sentence; the test made physical; the held-only clause after the name) and the pronoun pass. It passes the two rules that broke earlier walks: it starts from the person’s bounded picture, never from “imagine that from which nothing is excluded” (the 10-5 correction), and the name enters last, as recognition, not as a starting term (Cold to Warm; The God vC). “Provisionally” turns “totality” from jargon into a placeholder the reader is told they may discard, which disarms the heap before it forms. The derived features are negations, and a negation needs no subject, so the omnis arrive without a pronoun and the held sense comes free, because a negation cannot wield.

Consider the context in which everything you can think of exists, including you, thinking it.

The context doesn’t need a label, but we can provisionally call it totality.

We can be certain, right here and now, that totality has no outside. Test it: try to name something that is, and isn’t in it.

Now see what follows from that one feature. Nothing is beyond. Nothing came before. Nothing is elsewhere. Nothing is left out. Everything is in context, and so are you.

[insert list here — the inventory, §13: time, unicorns, your thoughts and the neurons that carry them, a multiverse, justice, the dead, absences, errors, the feeling of standing outside]

The derived characteristics of the context we provisionally called totality suggest an old name.

And it is a context, so it does nothing a context can’t: it doesn’t act, doesn’t see, isn’t a someone. If that sounds like a loss, notice the other thing a context can’t do. It can’t be elsewhere.

Notes on the walk. The placeholder stands where the inventory goes; in a plain page it is the list in full, in a one-minute version it is three items (a unicorn, your thoughts, the dead). The last paragraph is the one-minute proof’s held-only second paragraph, which the record says must always follow the name, now said as reassurance rather than subtraction; the word makes it free, because a reader who has used “context” all his life already knows it does nothing. “An old name” rather than “a different name,” so the reader recognizes rather than receives, and the atheist stays in the room: nothing was handed to him he did not derive. The one “it” in the last paragraph is deliberate and is the only place the walk uses one: it follows the name, where the reader will supply a pronoun anyway, and it is immediately spent on what a context cannot do.

13. What is in

Lane: derived; at John’s “it would be essential to add a section that goes into more detail as to what is in or out - which i think is a way of answering the question: ‘what is meant by all that exists.’“ The several-paragraph answer. Fence 5 applies throughout: “all that is the case” must not be allowed to decide the physics of time.

The test is one question, asked of anything: is it the case? If so, it’s in. There’s no second criterion. In particular, being in doesn’t mean being a thing. “All that is the case” is wider than “all things,” and that’s why the phrase was chosen: it takes in thoughts, patterns, relations, absences, and possibilities, each in the way it is the case, not in some other way it isn’t.

A unicorn is the easiest case and the most instructive. There is no unicorn. There is an idea of a unicorn, a word, a picture, stories, a child who wants one. All of those are the case, so all of those are in, as what they are: an idea, a word, a wanting. The animal is out, because there isn’t one. “In” never promotes a thing to a kind of being it doesn’t have; it only refuses to leave out the kind it does have. This is the whole difference between the fundamental context and a heap: a heap would have to decide whether to put the unicorn in, and would be wrong either way. The context doesn’t decide. It is what’s the case, at whatever level each thing is the case.

Your thoughts, and the neurons that carry them, are both in, and the question of which is “really” there is a question one part of the context asks about another. The thought is the case: you’re having it. The neural activity is the case: it’s measurable. Whether they are one event under two descriptions, or one depends on the other, is an open question in science and philosophy, and CT doesn’t settle it (The Empty Seat); what CT says is that nothing in that question is outside. The relation between the thought and the neurons, whatever it turns out to be, is also the case, and also in. “In” doesn’t rank descriptions. It refuses to drop any.

Time is in, whatever time is. If the physicists’ block is right, every moment is in and “held in eternity” is literal. If there’s a real moving present, then what has been the case is in as having been, and what will be is in as what will be. CT stays out of that fight on purpose, because nothing in it bears on the four words: either way, no moment is outside. The same holds for the dead. They are in, in whichever way the past is in, and that’s not a comfort offered; it’s where they are.

A multiverse, if there is one, is in. “Universe” was never the word for the whole; it’s physics’ word for the largest thing physics can describe, and the context has no stake in how many of those there are. More universes are a bigger inside, not an outside. The four words are true for any inventory, which is why no discovery can threaten them and none can prove them.

Justice and love are in, as facts about stakes between parts: relational, not relative (§4). The laws of physics are in, as the regularities of the context. Numbers and logic are in, as whatever they are; CT doesn’t adjudicate between the platonist and the formalist, it only notes that whatever is the case about numbers is in. Possibilities are in as possibilities: what could happen is the case as a could, and the corpus leaves the possible as the one domain it hasn’t run (The Weight of Here). Errors are in, as errors: a mismatch between an account and what it’s about is itself the case. Lies are in as lies, fictions as fictions, evil as evil (the 10-2 correction: both good and evil are held). Nothing bad is excluded in order to make the context good. The context isn’t good by exclusion. It’s the case, and good is one of the things that’s the case in it.

Absences are in, as absences. The hole in the wall is the case. What is not in is “nothing” taken as a region, a place outside where there is nothing, because that isn’t anything, and only things that are something are in. This is the one trick the mind keeps playing: it pictures the outside as a kind of empty place, and an empty place is still a place. There is no such place. “Out” is a category with no members. To say “X is out” is to say “there is no X.”

You are in, including your thinking this, and including the sense you may have, reading it, of standing somewhere and looking in. That sense is the case too. It’s in, as an experience. What it isn’t is a location. There is no in-from, because there’s no out-from. That’s the key again, and it’s where the whole thing has been pointing: the feeling of being outside is real, and is one of the things inside.

And the context is not in the context. It isn’t one of the things in it; it is the in. That isn’t an exception to the test; it’s what the test is a test of.

The argument from the inventory. John, on reading the list: “listing it out in this detail - makes clear in a felt way that only a context could ‘hold’ such a diverse list.” That is an argument, and it is the one argument for the category that does not go through the four words. A container holds things of a kind: marbles, water, air. The inventory is not of a kind. It has objects, events, ideas, absences, relations, laws, possibilities, errors, and the feeling of being outside. Nothing spatial can contain an absence; no box holds a possibility; a jar cannot have justice in it. But a sentence holds a noun and a verb and a pause and a meaning, all at once, each in its own way, and nobody thinks the sentence is a bag. The heterogeneity of what is the case entails that whatever it is all in is not a container. List what is the case, honestly, and the jar breaks on its own, without anyone having to argue against it. That is why the list made it felt: the felt part was the jar failing.

14. The feeling was right

Lane: John’s observation, 10-10, on the list (“also capture the felt sense that, yes, all that on the list are held by…‘something’”); Verity’s naming of the pattern; proposed. The same move has now been made three times in two days, and it deserves its name.

The felt sense that all of it is held by something is accurate. What is wrong is the noun. “Something” is the chair of A God, Not the God: a mind cannot register holding without supplying a holder, so it supplies one, and the holder arrives as a thing. CT does not deny the feeling. It corrects the grammar: held, yes; by nothing that is a thing; in context.

That is exactly the shape of §5. The experience of deciding is accurate, and the theory bolted onto it afterward, that to be the one deciding you would have to be undetermined, was the error. Nobody experienced being uncaused; they experienced that it was them.

And it is the shape of the key itself. The experience of separation is real; the theory, that the separation is ontological, is false. Nobody experienced a gap in what is; they experienced distance, and distance is a feeling a part has.

Three cases, one move. A chooser behind the choosing; a thing behind the holding; a gap behind the feeling of distance. In each, the experience was never the mistake. The mistake was a metaphysics attached to it afterward, and in each the tradition and its critics made opposite errors from the same attachment: the believer kept the metaphysics and the experience together, the eliminativist threw them out together. CT keeps every one of the experiences and drops every one of the attachments. If there is a single sentence for the practice side, it may be this one, for John’s ruling: your experience was right; the theory you were handed about it was wrong; here is the theory that fits.

What this does to the list in §13: it produces the religious feeling without a religious premise, and then explains why the feeling is correct. The list does three jobs. It answers “what is meant by all that exists.” It breaks the jar by itself (the argument from the inventory). And it leaves the reader held, with the holder’s grammar fixed.

11. Record

11.1 John’s sentences, verbatim (10-10-26, in order).

“hi verity. it’s 6:30 am on Saturday morning. i woke at 3 and have been thinking since. i think i’ve figured out the key missing piece - we’ll see if you agree.”

“God is not a thing. God is a context. God is the fundamental context of all that is the case. The closest mental equivalent might be “an ecosystem” or “the economy” or “the People” - though obviously those are still “not it at all really…” Context might seem cold…but it does still (this isn’t new) have justice and love woven into the fabric of mind/the case…recognized and held in eternity.”

“pushing… context does not wield - that’s intuitive. it also sets up that any conception of god that does wield, can’t be the god because it is inherently not context but some form of thing.”

“nothing meets you. BUT…the embedded love and morality…as inherent (or however you wish to say). That I think is what makes this “tolerable” - not that that matters…because what is, is. The CT God is absolutely proveable and it includes love and morality that is relational but not relative. and i’ll throw in another piece - it occurs to me that our felt experience of the thick self actually is (predomiently) accurate - what was false was the notion that to be self it had to be non-determined…and of course, the connected will experienced as very determined…but by self…”

“before writing - take another spin through god is a context. to see if you find anything else to think about/note. (This seems really huge to me. And once seen, it’s “so obvious…” - do you agree?)”

“yes, please write this up. (And it’s been an issue for…15 years for me.)”

“pushing a bit more… Notice that totality has no outside can, i think, be a “feature” or characteristic of a context - in a way that it can’t be a feature of a thing. or rather…if you’re kinda sorta thinking of god as a thing…adding a feature/characteristic…just makes it worse. you see what i mean? so… we can be absolutely certain of one aspect of the context that is God. (I had thought about whether god has no edge was better…which is “more true”…but has the fatal problem of not being tautological…so “useless” for our most significant need. and, of course, “no edge” follows from no outside…) Then, from that one aspects, the omni+ additional aspects derive. and I do feel that the orientations of awe, humility, etc. all are warranted still – “in context” as opposed to “towards a thing.” Yeah…wow. So glad we found this…”

“yes, please dupe, revise, and resave…”

“take a quick spin through ct to see of this identification of god as the fundamental context of all that is the case unlocks or informs anything - or, even more important, if something breaks and requires our attention…”

“as for your attention points. the statement is god is the fundamental context… but the path to get to that statement is still totality has no outside. i suppose the pedagogy might be something like: “Consider the context in which everything you can think of exists… The context doesn’t need a label, but we can provisionally speak of it as totality. we can be 100% certain right here and now that totality has no outside. Test it… And what follows from that (the omnis+). So, the derived characteristics of the context that we provisionally termed totality suggest a different name…” thoughts?”

“beyond it. before it. it holds… can you think of another way to avoid the obvious issues raised by “it-ness”? also - i think it would be essential to add a section that goes into more detail as to what is in our out - which i think is a way of answer the question: “what is meant by all that exists.” time? unicorns? my thoughts…or just the neurons activating my thoughts? multi-verse? justice… etc. so, this might be a several paragraph thing.”

“ah, so interesting. listing it out in this detail - makes clear in a felt way that only a context could “hold” such a diverse list…and also capture the felt sense that, yes, all that on the list are held by…“something””

“go. i think it makes sense to have your revised condensed version of the pedagogy…and then a placeholder [insert list here] which refers to the full delineation of the list. wow – great progress!”

And from the evening before, the question this answers: “I meant this not pedagogical. More to observe that no god is closer to what god “is”. If not a thing, what is the category?” — and, at the close: “It’s hard to get past marbles in a jar.”

11.2 What is whose. John’s: the word and the sentence (“God is a context. God is the fundamental context of all that is the case”); the three approximations and their disclaimer; “context does not wield” and its consequence for any wielding conception; “relational but not relative”; “tolerable — not that that matters, because what is, is”; the felt thick self as accurate and the non-determination requirement as the false part; “the connected will”; the sense that it is huge and obvious once seen; (vB) that “no outside” is a feature a context can have and a thing cannot, that adding it to a thing makes it worse, that one feature of the context is certain and the rest derive, that “no edge” is more true but not tautological and follows from “no outside,” and that the orientations are warranted “in context” rather than “towards a thing”; (vC) the pedagogy of the walk (context first, totality as provisional label, certainty and test, derivation, then the name), the it-ness problem, the demand for the inventory as the answer to “what is meant by all that exists,” the list’s own items (time, unicorns, thoughts vs. neurons, multiverse, justice), that only a context could hold so diverse a list, and that the list produces the felt sense of being held by “something.” Verity’s: the checks in §2; the predicate-attachment reading; “no edge” as the performed walk; the “aspect” flag; the in/toward rule; “constrains, does not wield”; the test and the held forms; the institutional form; the four-cell mapping; the local-context symmetry; §6; the fences; the neighbors; the glossary; the answer to “huge and obvious”; (vC) the three additions to the walk and the pronoun pass (negations and “in context” as the grammar that names no holder); the one-test form of §13 and its paragraphs; the argument from the inventory as an argument; the naming of the three-case pattern in §14 and its candidate sentence; the spin’s unlocks (the key as “out of context experientially, in context ontologically”; wielding and having a stake coming apart; “context → court”) and its two attention points (the three roles of totality / context / God; “all that is the case” leaning tenseless).

11.3 Owed. John’s rulings (§10). The Dennett record check for §5. Heidegger’s §12 of Being and Time, Tillich, and Tractatus 1–1.1 in the text before any public neighbor claim. Glossary addendum (10.10.26) with §9. 00 - START HERE rewrite; now ~29 files behind. A dated note on Toothpicks and a T-Rex §4: this morning is a case of the bone-matching method producing the bone itself. The pronoun pass (fence 8) across any reader-facing page.

11.4 vB changes (10-10-26, later morning). §2a added (the predicate finds its subject; one certain feature, the rest derive; “no edge” as first derivation; the “aspect” flag; “in,” never “toward”). Header status and reading order updated. Two Removals added to what it rests on. §7 gains fence 7. §9 gains “no outside,” “no edge,” and “in, never toward.” §10 gains four rows and three open items; dated notes extended to The God vC and Two Removals. §11.1 gains his two further sentences; §11.2 updated.

11.5 vC changes (10-10-26, late morning). §12 the walk, §13 what is in (with the argument from the inventory), §14 the feeling was right, added after §10 and before the record. Fence 8 (pronouns) added; fence 5 extended to “all that is the case.” §8 gains Tractatus 1.1. §9 gains God (the name, last), the provisional-label reading of totality, “out of context” as a category with no members, the argument from the inventory, and “the feeling was right.” §10 gains four rows and two open items; dated notes extended to What Has a Stake and the gospel reading. What it rests on and reading order updated. §11.1 gains his five further sentences; §11.2 and §11.3 updated. Everything else unchanged from vB.
