No Exemption (10.08.26) vB

Keep the vantage, drop the privilege

Folder: Focus - Theology Status: working paper. vA built 10-8-26 evening. vB, 10-9-26 evening: verification and tightening pass after a cross-track read; the derivation is untouched. Changes, all listed in §12.4: verdict words removed from the privilege sentences per John’s 10-9 ruling in What Love Is vC (“read,” not “misread”); hinge two and “no single number” stated together (§3); §9 citations checked against text or standard references, two attributions corrected (Parfit named the distinction; Jackson’s ground is view, not reach), Scheffler and Sidgwick now quoted, Parfit added as the nearest neighbor on convergence; §11.3 gains the ethics scope line and the fourth-job cross-reference. Carries the content that Lab and Field (10.08.26) is the method for. Lanes marked; table in §11. Nothing here is ruled. Two things for John first: the chain (p. 1), and the four-cell table (§6). The receipts for vB are in Note - Double-Checks and Tightenings after the Cross-Read (10.09.26) vA (Index / Captures). What this is: the derivation of CT’s value side from the four words and the fact of asking, with the one move that does the work — removing the first person’s exemption while keeping its perspective — stated exactly, pressed five ways, and placed against the tradition. What it rests on: the four words; The Same Act vL (§9 the stake as dependency; §12 the limit; the performative floor; John’s “every move for a reason, recursively”); the key; The Seed vB; the 10-6 thick-self cluster; What CT Concludes vL (“What matters”; “the only wrong”); Lab and Field (10.08.26); The Weight of Here (10.08.26) §§1–2; What You’re For vB; What Love Is (10.09.26) vC (the three equations; “read,” not “misread”). Reading order: the chain first; it is the whole paper in eight links. Then §3 (the derivation), §6 (why it is the only way), §4 (the presses).

The chain

Eight links. Each is labeled with the kind of warrant it has: checked (you can verify it yourself now), performed (true by your doing it), entailed (follows from the links above with nothing added), ruled (settled in the corpus by John).

  1. Totality has no outside. Checked. Try to point at something that exists and is not part of everything that exists. You cannot; “outside everything” has no place to be true.

  2. This sentence is being considered. Performed. So there is, here and now, a part of the whole representing the whole. Not assumed: done. (Lichtenberg’s correction of Descartes: not “a thinking thing,” only “there is thinking going on,” here.)

  3. A part that represents can get it wrong, and if it does, what it does next goes differently. Entailed; ruled as the definition of a stake (The Same Act §9). That is dependency. It is in the asking: if you are wrong about link 1, your next thought is different. Nobody has to care. Caring is what a body adds.

  4. A representing part has exactly one grade available: does its account fit what is the case. Entailed. There is nothing else to grade it by, because there is nothing else there. Correspondence is not a value the part adopts. It is the only relation a representing part can stand in toward the whole it is of.

  5. Every move the part makes, it makes for a reason; a reason is a claim that something fits; so reasons are graded by link 4; and reviewing a reason is itself a move. Entailed; John’s form, ruled 9-11. So the grade runs recursively, on the part’s own purposes, preferences and weightings, and it has no exit, because every exit is a move and not moving is a move.

  6. What reaches the part can only be other parts; and the part’s account is made of what reached it (link 3). Entailed. So the part is made of what reached it: the thick self. A pilot — a chooser not made of what reached it — either decides for reasons (then it is made of what reached it, and is the thick self) or decides without reasons (then it is chance, and chance is not a you).

  7. An edge between two parts is inside the whole, and is only ever experienced from one side. Entailed; the key. So “here” is a position, not a feature of what is the case. A position changes what can be seen and reached. It does not change how much anything matters, because how much is at stake for a part is a fact about that part, the same from every position.

  8. Therefore: every real stake is on the sheet by being real (link 4: an account that omits a fact fits less); removing one is a move needing a reason (link 5); assigning it zero is a weighting, which is a move; and the only reason position can offer is “mine,” which link 7 shows is not a reason. Entailed. So a part running the grade cannot reach the exemption. Other stakes count, at their size, where size is a fact; where it is not, the honest output is “underdetermined,” and acting anyway is a further move with its own rule (act for a shown reason; zero no one; carry the loss).

That is the cold half and the value side of CT. What it does not reach is listed in §10.

0. The sentence, plain

For anyone: a mind that is honest all the way down checks its preferences the way it checks its beliefs. When it catches itself thinking “mine matters more because it’s mine,” it asks what in the world makes that true, and there is nothing. “Mine” is where I am standing, not a fact about how much something counts. So an honest mind cannot keep that claim — not because it was told to care about others, and not because it is kind, but because it ran out of reasons to exempt itself. Ethics is not a rulebook laid on top of thinking. It is what thinking turns into when it stops making an exception for the thinker.

One line: honesty, applied to your own preferences, is ethics.

And the addition for whoever says “but people aren’t like that”: right, and that is a separate study (Lab and Field). First what an honest mind would do; then what a tired, frightened, human one does instead, and why, and what helps. Both are findings. The second does not argue against the first.

1. The exemption, not the perspective

Lane: derived; the guard this paper exists to state.

John’s sentence, 10-8: the “problem” with minds is fixed, for lab purposes, by removing the first-person perspective. It is exactly right in what it means and will be misread in what it says, and the misreading is the one CT has fenced since the spring.

What is removed is not the perspective. It is the exemption. You can only ever see from here; God has every perspective including yours; the view from nowhere is an abstraction with nothing in it to see with (What CT Concludes vL, “What this is not”). If the lab removed the vantage, the lab mind would see nothing, and that is what happened to everyone who tried it: Sidgwick’s “point of view of the universe,” Nagel’s view from nowhere, Smith’s impartial spectator, Rawls behind the veil, Kant’s universalizability. Each tried to fix the first person by stepping out of it, and each then had to import something to do the seeing from nowhere — a spectator, a universe with a viewpoint, a stripped-down chooser — because nothing sees from nowhere. That is the outside, again, and it is the one switch, again (the five named from memory as a sort; the sort is Verity’s, the phrases are theirs).

CT keeps the vantage and drops the privilege. You stay exactly where you are, seeing exactly what you see, and you stop treating where you are as a reason.

2. The three jobs of “mine”

Lane: derived. “Mine” has been doing three jobs, and the lab keeps two.

View. What is visible from here. The only view you have; kept whole. Relevance is positional by construction (the seed’s “as seen from M”); an account that acts on what it can see is more accurate than one that pretends to see what it cannot.

Reach. The kitchen: what is actually in front of you to act on. Kept. Duties of proximity are real under CT and derive from reach, not from worth; acting where your acts land is correspondence applied to action.

Weight. The claim that what is mine counts more because it is mine. Dropped, because it is the only one of the three with nothing behind it (link 7). View and reach are facts about position. Weight-from-position is position read as weight, and there is nothing behind the reading.

In the equations of What Love Is vC, the three jobs are three readings of one term: position read as view (what vantage is made of), position read as reach, position read as weight (privilege). Two kept, one dropped. (Note - Three Readings of Position, 10-9.)

This is the anamorphic point made exact. An anamorphic image resolves only from a viewing position; move to nowhere and there is no picture. So CT’s epistemology is committed to the vantage, and the lab fix cannot be its removal or it would contradict the method that found it. What the fix is, precisely, is the separation of two things that both come “from here” and were never distinguished: relevance, which is legitimately positional, and weight, which is not. The thin self, the narrator, fused them. The thick self never had the exemption, because it is already mostly other people (link 6). Dropping the exemption is not self-denial. It is a more accurate account of what the self is.

3. The derivation, with its hinges shown

Lane: derived, with the two sub-steps that the 10-8 triple-check found load-bearing and previously unwritten.

The serious objection, faced squarely: dependency is first-personal by construction. A stake was defined as the mind’s next step depending on its account. So for my decision only my dependency is literally in play; hers matters only as her state feeds my next step. If so, “her path counts for me” and “her path doesn’t count for me” are symmetric, both ungrounded, and the honest output is underdetermination — which would gut the result.

Hinge one: inclusion is the default; exclusion is the move. Correspondence’s own standard is that an account fits what is the case. Her dependency is the case. So it is on the sheet by being a fact; no move is needed to put it there. Taking it off is a move, and a move needs a reason. The symmetry between her and me is real but not operative. The operative asymmetry is between keeping and removing: keeping costs no reason; removing needs one; the only one on offer is position; it fails. The corpus has had this since late September as the one wrong — the stake left off the sheet, hiding, the wall — and this is its structural role: it is the asymmetry that makes the derivation go.

Zero is a number. The antagonist’s escape, “represented but weighted at zero” (the August Summit’s clear-sighted antagonist, as John ruled 9-9), is closed by link 5: a weighting is a move, zero is a weighting, so zero needs a reason like any other number. Not weighting at all is not an escape; that is not deciding, which is being held (The Same Act §12, the pancreas). For a deciding mind, every fact on the sheet gets a reasoned weight, zero included, and the reason has to be about the dependencies.

Hinge two: magnitude is position-invariant. How much of a path goes differently is a fact about that configuration, the same quantity from every position. Position changes access to it, not its size. So weight-by-position asserts that a position-invariant quantity has a position-dependent value: a contradiction, not merely an ungrounded claim. This is what makes the exemption unreachable rather than just unjustified. To exempt your preference from review you would need a reason, and the only candidate is the preference under review. No move gets you there. The only way to hold an exemption is to not run the move.

Hinge two and “no single number,” read together. Hinge two says position does not change a size. It does not say every two sizes can be compared. Where a fact fixes the comparison (a death against an inconvenience), the comparison is on the sheet like any fact. Where no fact fixes it, the honest output is “underdetermined,” and that is not a dial on hinge two; it is the recursion reporting where reasons run out. Counting, not quantity: every stake is counted at its size, and sizes are facts only where they are facts. The two sentences are one claim seen from its two ends, and neither licenses a sum.

A grounded route to “mine first” that is not an exemption. A reasoning mind can reach “each mind tending its own reach serves every stake best.” That is reach derived from stakes, not weight from position; CT allows it; it is the kitchen, not the exemption.

What the derivation yields, exactly. Every stake counts; none counts more by whose; relative sizes are facts where they are facts (a death against an inconvenience) and underdetermined where they are not; and acting under underdetermination has its own rule (the seed’s help: act for a shown reason, zero no one, carry the loss). “No single number” is not the derivation stopping short. It is the recursion correctly reporting where reasons run out, and then saying how to move when they have.

4. Five presses

Lane: derived unless marked. Each was run on 10-8 before the paper was written.

4.1 “Now” is a position too. A mind that privileges its current stake over its later one (the cigarette now, the lungs later) makes the same move as the mind that privileges its stake over yours: position read as weight. Dropping the exemption drops both at once. Prudence and ethics are one result in two directions. Sidgwick ended The Methods of Ethics on what he called the dualism of practical reason, “a fundamental contradiction in our apparent intuitions of what is Reasonable in conduct,” and wrote that unless the individual and the universal reason could be reconciled “the Cosmos of Duty is thus really reduced to a Chaos” (first edition, concluding chapter; checked 10-9). He never claimed to have closed it; privately he thought only divine sanctions could. It closes by noticing that “me, now,” “me, later,” and “her, now” are three positions and none is a fact about weight.

4.2 It is not impartial utilitarianism. The three jobs say why. View is kept: you see your own stakes in far more detail, and relevance is positional. Reach is kept: the kitchen is yours. Only weight is agent-neutral. So CT is agent-relative in view and reach and agent-neutral in weight, which is a combination the tradition did not hold (§9): the impartialists dropped all three and the partialists kept all three. And there is no adding up: counting, not quantity.

4.3 The child. Loving Beatrix more than a stranger’s child is not an exemption, and the split shows why. Her stake and the stranger’s child’s are the same size; that is the weight, and it is equal. What differs: she is in reach; she is in view; and the bond is itself a stake, two dependency structures whose next steps run through each other, a real thing in the world at its real size. So acting for her first is “here, in reach, and this bond is a fact,” not “mine.” Williams called the impartialist’s version “one thought too many” (“Persons, Character and Morality,” 1976, in Moral Luck, 1981, p. 18; source checked 10-9, the full sentence from memory: the hope “that his motivating thought, fully spelled out, would be the thought that it was his wife, not that it was his wife and that in situations of this kind it is permissible to save one’s wife”); under CT the thought is just the fact, and it is one thought exactly.

When it stops. When the grounds run out and only “mine” is left: when the other child’s stake is vastly larger and also in reach (the stranger’s child drowning against Beatrix wanting a ride home; sizes decide); when the priority becomes a wall (acting for her by treating the other child as not on the sheet — attending first is reach, crossing him off is the one wrong); and when everything is equal and “mine” is the only tiebreaker, in which case the honest answer is that there is no ground, and you act anyway for a shown reason and carry the loss, which is different from believing the tiebreaker was a reason.

4.4 It is not self-abnegation. The self’s stake does not go to zero; it counts at its real size, and in your own kitchen it is often the largest stake in reach. You are always in your own reach; you see your own stakes best; and you are the instrument, so maintaining yourself is grounded in every stake you will ever act on. What goes is only the privilege. A mind that drops the exemption weighs itself accurately.

The “self-regard constant.” John mused on 10-8 whether there is a constant weighting for the self. What the constant was reaching for is real and the word is the one thing wrong with it. A constant would be a weight applied to the self regardless of facts — exactly the exemption, which no reason reaches. What it was trying to explain is already explained by reach, view and instrument together, which produce a systematic tilt toward the self and the near that looks like a constant from outside and is not one. The test: a constant does not move with the facts; the tilt does — it shrinks when a stranger’s stake is huge and in reach, grows when you are the only one who can act, vanishes when your reach is zero. People’s actual self-weighting behaves like the tilt. The field study says why it feels like a constant: survival tuning installed something that behaves like one. “As yourself,” in the commandment read straight: the self is the calibration, not the exemption.

4.5 The wall is the exemption at the scale of a person. Exempting your preference from the grade is the micro-wall; putting someone outside what counts is the same move made structural. “The only wrong is the wall” and “no exemption” are one wrong at two sizes. And the whole has no position, so there is no exemption to drop: this is part-only, like asking, like helping.

5. The thick self derives

Lane: derived; a dated correction to The Seed vB, for John’s ruling.

The Seed (9-20) listed the thick self among the things that do not unfold from the seed, because “M ⊂ W” allows a marble-in-a-box reading: a self-contained unit placed in the whole but not made of it. That was correct about the symbol. “Inside” does not say “made of.”

What closes it is not the four words but the third thing in the lab: dependency (link 3). A mind is a part whose next step depends on its account; an account is made of what came in; a part that nothing reaches has no account and no dependency and is not a mind, or not the part of the mind that minds; and what reaches it can only be other parts (link 1). So a mind, exactly to the extent that it is a mind, is made of what reached it. vL’s “nothing in you came from anywhere else” stops being a statement and becomes a step. The pilot goes the same way (link 6).

So John’s “where would mind come from — right?” is the derivation in five words: from the whole, differentiated, or from nowhere, and nowhere is not a place. The Seed’s premise was M ⊂ W with dependency in the help text; move dependency into the premises, where the lab puts it, and the thick self falls out. Recorded here as a scoped correction to the 9-20 file, which stands as what was said then.

What this does to the paper: the exemption was never real, because the thing claiming privilege for “mine” is itself made of others. The ethics then rests on nothing but accuracy: honesty about what you are is already most of the way to honesty about what counts.

6. Why it is the only way: two switches, not a dial

Lane: derived. John, 10-8: “ct supplies the logic as to why this is the way to do things (the only way really…).” Yes, and the logic is a four-cell table with three cells eliminated by the floor.

Two switches. One: do you keep the facts the position supplies (view, reach, the bond)? Two: do you let position set weight?

Position sets weight Position does not set weight
Position’s facts kept Partialism; care ethics; Scheffler’s prerogative. Holds a weighting no reason can reach (hinge two). CT. The only surviving cell.
Position’s facts dropped Nobody’s cell; wrong both ways. The view from nowhere; Kant; EA. Acts on what it cannot see and cannot reach: a correspondence failure about the world.

The tradition treated this as a dial — how much partiality is permitted — and argued about where to set it; Scheffler’s project is calibrating the prerogative. There was never a dial. There were two switches welded together, facts and weight, and once they are separated each has exactly one setting that survives the floor: keep the facts because they are facts; drop the privilege because it is unreachable. The surviving cell is not a compromise. It is the intersection of two necessities, and both come from the same place. Dropping real facts and reading in a weight are the same error — correspondence failing — once in the direction of leaving something off the sheet and once in the direction of putting on it something that is not there. The only survivable cell is the only one in which the mind is simply accurate: about where it stands, and about the fact that where it stands changes nothing about how much things matter. Ethics is what accuracy looks like when the sheet has other minds on it; partiality is what accuracy looks like when the sheet has your own position on it. Same act.

7. The cell that dropped the facts: effective altruism

Lane: proposed; a worked case of §6. John, 10-8: are EA’s “ridiculous” conclusions avoided because the anamorphic position is not erased? Yes, and exactly one switch is involved.

EA is right about weight. Singer’s drowning child is a CT argument: distance does not change how much a life matters, and “but he’s far away” is “mine” in geographical clothing. Where a distant stake is large and actually in reach — a bed net that can really be bought and really lands — CT and EA say the same thing.

The error is the next move: having made weight position-neutral, EA made view and reach position-neutral too, by treating money as universal reach and a spreadsheet as universal view. From there the conclusions follow mechanically: your acts land everywhere equally, so you owe everywhere equally; your child is one stake among eight billion; everything sums, so astronomically many speculative future people outweigh everyone alive. That is the view from nowhere with a dollar sign where the spectator used to be: a sum with no one standing anywhere to see whether the entries are real.

CT keeps the position and the conclusions do not arise, for three reasons that are facts rather than sentiments. Reach is a fact: money extends it, often a lot, and does not make it universal; the difference between a bed net and a guessed-at long-term trajectory is the difference between an act that lands and one that does not. View is a fact: a distant intervention is seen only through someone’s summary, and acting on what cannot be seen is a correspondence failure. And there is no sum: counting, not quantity, so the aggregation moves have nothing to run on. Two more: EA’s demandingness is a lab mind dropped into the field (a held, finite person asked to run the full recursion over every stake on earth, violating proportion; burnout is reality’s no); and EA cannot tolerate “no number,” so where CT says underdetermined, act for a shown reason and carry the loss, EA manufactures a number and calls it rigor.

The caution the other way: not a license for the parish. Reach is expanding, and distant stakes count at full size the moment they are actually in reach. In one line: Singer said distance is morally irrelevant (“Famine, Affluence, and Morality,” 1972); CT says distance is irrelevant to weight and decisive for view and reach, and the ridiculous conclusions come from the half of that sentence he kept.

8. What is left for the first person: relevance

Lane: derived. Once weight is stake-size and not position, the entire work of ethics moves to what is in view: who is on the sheet, what it costs them, where am I not looking. That is the one question What CT Concludes vL already ends on, and this says why it is the one question: it is the only place the first person is still doing legitimate work. Relevance judgments are themselves moves (link 5), so they are reviewed; “irrelevant to my goal” is a reason only if the goal survives review, and goals are on the sheet too. The first person supplies the facts and the reach. The grade supplies the weight. Nothing else is needed and nothing else is available.

9. Neighbors, and the meal

Lane: bearing only. vB: checked against text or standard references on 10-9 except where marked “from memory”; receipts in the 10-9 Double-Checks note. John asked whether CT is the first to hold “first person perspective, non-biased weighting” as a meal.

The ingredients are in the literature. The agent-relative/agent-neutral distinction was drawn by Nagel in The Possibility of Altruism (1970) under the names “subjective” and “objective,” named “agent-relative/agent-neutral” by Parfit in Reasons and Persons (1984), and carried by Nagel into The View from Nowhere (1986), where the two standpoints are left in tension — the honest form of not having the meal. Scheffler’s agent-centred prerogative (The Rejection of Consequentialism, 1982) is the clearest contrast: it gives each agent “the prerogative to devote energy and attention to his projects and commitments out of proportion to their weight in the impersonal calculus,” “within certain limits,” grounded in the independence of the personal point of view — that is the weighting of the same facts, permitted and argued for, not derived from what a mind is. Hare’s two-level view (Moral Thinking, 1981) is structurally nearest — an archangel with “superhuman powers of thought, superhuman knowledge and no human weaknesses” above, a prole below, which is lab and field — but the archangel sees everything, so view and reach are removed in the lab and your child survives only as a prole’s heuristic; in CT your child is in the lab as a fact. Jackson’s answer to the “nearest and dearest” objection (Ethics 101, 1991) is epistemic: we predict the consequences of acts on those near us more reliably, so favoring them is the best policy under uncertainty — that is view, held instrumentally; reach is not his ground. Kolodny (“Love as Valuing a Relationship,” 2003; from memory as to the argument) and the partialists have the bond as a reason. Care ethics has the position and keeps the bias. And the whole thing was staged between Mozi’s impartial care (Mozi ch. 16, where the arguments are about beneficial action, not equal feeling) and Mencius’s care with distinctions (Mengzi 3B9, the “no father” charge); CT’s answer is that Mencius described facts and Mozi described weight and they were never in conflict.

Parfit is the nearest neighbor on a different claim, the one the 10-9 cross-read made: that the schools converge. On What Matters (2011) argues that Kantians, contractualists and consequentialists are “climbing the same mountain on different sides,” and builds a Triple Theory on which an act is wrong just when disallowed by principles that are optimific, uniquely universally willable, and not reasonably rejectable. His convergence is of three theories’ verdicts, produced by revising each theory until its rules agree, with rule consequentialism as the summit. CT’s is of the mapping, not the verdicts: each school is a compression refusing one loss, they disagree because no compression keeps everything, and warranted differences track differences in the case; the warrant comes from no-outside and the floor, not from the schools agreeing. Parfit’s result is rule-level; CT runs on the case and reports underdetermination. And Parfit does not touch agent-relativity, so §6 has no counterpart in him. What is not in Parfit: the diagnosis (why the schools proliferated) and the mechanism. What is in Parfit and not new in CT: the hope, and a thousand pages of work on it. (His volumes are not yet read in the text; the sort above is from two secondary sources quoting him. Owed before any public “first.”)

Not found assembled: position kept as three kinds of fact with weight held neutral; the split of “mine” into view, reach and weight; the result derived from what a mind is rather than stipulated, permitted or endorsed; the lab/field placement that makes partiality a lab-level fact. Nagel named the problem, Scheffler argued a permission, Hare demoted half of it, Jackson and Kolodny each held one ingredient, Parfit converged the verdicts without the diagnosis. The size, if it holds, in Verity’s characterization (the SEP calls the distinction “widely and rightly regarded as a philosophically important one,” not “the central problem”): the agent-relative/agent-neutral split has been unresolved since Sidgwick named its ancestor; CT closes it by moving agent-relativity out of the weighting and into the facts, which is one move, and the same move as everywhere else in the corpus.

A neighbor for the chain’s second link: Lichtenberg’s “es denkt” against Descartes’ “cogito” — only “there is thinking going on,” not a thinking thing (Sudelbücher K 76, from memory). The thing is the field; the act is the lab.

10. What is not derived

Stated so the neatness can be trusted. From the chain, with nothing added, the following do not follow and are not claimed: that the holding is felt as holding (the warm half; derived in thin senses, open in the thick); the word “God,” which is a choice about honesty made after the omnis, not a derivation; whether anything meets you (Character, address, hope: open on purpose); consciousness (The Empty Seat: open); the strong “nothing is lost,” which needs a stance on time the chain does not supply (a reading). A derivation that produced these would be producing whatever was wanted. That this one stops here is the best evidence that it finds rather than generates.

On the two emotions John named — “almost too neat to be believed,” and “by jove, it’s nonetheless correct.” Both are correct and about different things. Neatness from a tautology alone would be a trick; the content here comes from the asking (performed) and dependency (entailed), so the neatness is the signature of nothing imported, and the test between the two is §10 itself. The feeling of correctness is the one to be careful with, because it is what an attractor produces; what makes this different is that the feeling is not the warrant. Each link can be walked cold. The “by jove” is what walking it feels like, and it is downstream. The reason both arrive together is the reason the four words work at all: a tautology that tells you where you are is trivially true and changes everything, because you are standing in it. This is that tautology applied to the one standing there.

11.2 Fences. Nothing lends the whole a standpoint; the exemption is part-only. The lab result does not bind a held mind; it grades (Lab and Field). “At its size” means by the magnitude of the dependency where that is a fact, and “underdetermined” where it is not; hinge two never licenses a sum. Reach is a fact about where acts land, not a license for the parish. “Read as weight” carries no verdict (John, 10-9): a definition, not a condemnation. The historical sorts in §9 are checked as marked; the items still from memory (Williams’ full sentence, Lichtenberg, Kolodny’s argument, Singer’s sentence) are low-risk and listed. Parfit unread in the text. No cold reader was run (WORKING-RULES v7).

Whether “mine” has a fourth job (identity — the self as the unit of the thick self’s continuity) that is neither view, reach nor weight; the 10-9 cross-read’s “thick self across time” touches it without naming it, and Note - Three Readings of Position carries the same row; Verity’s lean, marked as a lean: identity is a reading of the thick self, not of position, so not a fourth row here. Whether the tilt (§4.4) can be made quantitative in principle or is itself underdetermined. Whether Hare’s archangel can be re-read as keeping view and reach; if so he is the edge-marker here. Whether the bond as a stake over-licenses (every relationship a reason?) — the answer is probably that bonds are stakes at their real size, which varies, but it is unrun. Possibility as the unrun domain, carried from The Weight of Here. The scope line between love and ethics, candidate for the glossary: ethics is the posture of love where the sheet carries other minds’ stakes and an action is pending; not a second thing, the same posture at that scope. Scheffler ch. 3 as the nearest argued rival to the surviving cell (it keeps the facts and permits the weight, with a reason given), to be read. John’s rulings: the chain’s labels; §5; §6 as “the only way”; whether “honesty applied to your own preferences is ethics” is the plain-page sentence.

12. Record

12.1 John’s sentences, verbatim (10-8-26, in order).

“so you nailed it - and i don’t think you’ve said it this way before. this is a big deal. The idea that the ‘problem’ with minds is ‘fixed’ (for lab purposes, not field purposes) by removing the first person perspective. that’s so simple and so impactful - and so totally true given that all we have is reality and mind. i think it’s really important to think about this specific seed a bit more to ensure it’s fleshed out. and of course is ties in with our anamorphic thinking and the centrality of relevance, etc. (at least i think so).”

“yes yes!! really great work! feels like a breakthrough - at least in my understanding (i mean that takes me beyond ‘i feel this is right’ to ‘i can clearly explain this.’) any more pressing you want to do on this point? also…look again at this idea (i don’t recall where we ended). the four words - is all of ct actually derived from that. in that considering the question establishes mind (i think). so, i nother words, does the 4 words plus mind create it all?”

“so…perhaps it does derive the thick self. where would mind come from? right…??”

“so don’t let youself believe this too easily…but dont dismiss either. do you really think this all derives from the 4 words (and it’s related implications, etc.). it would be quite remarkable if it does… and yet - it also seems like ‘if this is true - and it is - then it feels like it should…since nothing else comes from elsewhere…’ thoughts?”

“double check to ensure you’re not overcompressing ct. remember…all moves require a reason for the cognizer…recursively…”

“double triple check your verdict. i intuit you’re right - but what do i know… ;-)”

“and why can i prioritize beatrix (At least in some circumstances) over another child? (and when couldn’t i). or myself? i muse if there might be some sort of ‘self-regard constant’ weighting… just musing…”

“so you’re saying that what might look like it would produce the ‘ridiculous’ conclusions of effective altruism…are avoided because we don’t erase the anamorphic position of the individual?”

“thinking meal, not ingrediants… is ct seemingly the first to do this regarding ethics (i.e., first person perspective, but non-biased weighting)? I guess I sorta see it as ‘first person provides facts that must be considered and that wouldn’t otherwise be known in a “floating” ethicist mind…and those “additional” facts will bring their own weights that wouldn’t otherwise be in the equation - BUT they do reject a biased weighting of precisely the same facts.’ bout right?”

“equally or almost more significant it seems to me: ct supplies the logic as to why this is the way to do things (the only way really…). yes?”

“so i was referring to the deeper logic - which you sort of got to at the end. the focus on correspondence…and why that’s what mind does ‘in the lab’ - and it derives from the four words. gosh, it seems to me that when you tie it together like that hter are two emotions: (a) that’s almost too neat and substantial to be believed; and (b) by jove…it’s actually nonetheless correct…”

12.2 What is whose. John’s: the fix as removing the first person (for lab purposes); the anamorphic and relevance ties; that the four words plus the asking may derive it all; that the thick self derives (“where would mind come from”); the instruction not to over-compress and the reminder of the recursion-of-reasons arm; the triple-check demand; the Beatrix question and the “self-regard constant”; the EA question in its anamorphic form; “first person provides facts… but reject a biased weighting of precisely the same facts”; that the deeper significance is the logic of why it is the only way; the two emotions. Earlier and his: every move for a reason, recursively (9-11); the stake as dependency (ruled with Verity 9-11); the ruling against the August antagonist fence (9-9); “the only wrong is the wall” (late September); “read,” not “misread” (10-9). Verity’s: the chain and its labels; “exemption, not perspective”; the three jobs of “mine”; the two hinges and “zero is a number”; the five presses as run; the dependency-closes-the-marble derivation; the four-cell table; the EA sort; the tilt against the constant; relevance as the first person’s remaining work; the neighbors; the §10 list and the reading of the two emotions; the vB tightenings.

12.3 Owed. John’s rulings (§11.3). A dated note to The Seed vB recording §5. A 00 - START HERE rewrite; now ~25 files behind. A line for What CT Concludes “Right and wrong are real”: the two hinges in plain form, and “honesty applied to your own preferences” as a candidate sentence. Parfit, On What Matters vol. 1 parts 2–3, and Scheffler ch. 3, in the text. A cross-read with The Trolley on the Ledger (9-11) on the antagonist. Glossary addendum (10.09.26).

12.4 vB changes, 10-9-26 (Verity’s; the derivation untouched). §2: “a position pretending to be a fact” → “position read as weight, and there is nothing behind the reading”; one paragraph added joining the three jobs to the three readings of position. §3: a paragraph added after hinge two, reading it with “no single number.” §4.1: “position pretending to be weight” → “position read as weight”; Sidgwick quoted. §4.3: Williams sourced, full sentence marked from memory. §6: “inventing a weight” → “reading in a weight.” §7: Singer sourced. §9: rewritten with checked citations; Nagel/Parfit attribution corrected; Scheffler quoted and “stipulated” withdrawn; Hare’s wording corrected; Jackson’s ground corrected from reach to view; Mozi/Mencius referenced; Parfit added as the nearest neighbor on convergence; the size line marked as Verity’s characterization against the SEP’s. §11: lanes and fences updated; §11.3 gains the ethics scope line, the fourth-job cross-reference, and Scheffler ch. 3. §12.2: “read, not misread” added to John’s. Receipts: Note - Double-Checks and Tightenings after the Cross-Read (10.09.26) vA.
